SPA 801 STUDIES ON MEDIEVAL SPANISH LITERATURE This course considers the production of hegemonic discourses as well as the representation of marginal voices in texts chosen from the 13th through the 15th centuries (El Cantar de Mio Cid, the Libro de Apolonio, the Libro del caballero Zifar, El Conde Lucanor, El Libro de buen amor and La Celestina). Chief among the questions posed by this course are the ways in which Medieval Spain is defined in different chronological contexts in relation to race, politics, and economy. 3
SPA 803 MEDIEVAL SPANISH LYRIC AND ROMANCERO This course focuses on the medieval lyric world of the Iberian Peninsula with a special interest in the Castilian tradition of the late Middle Ages. 3
SPA 805 PICARESQUE WRITINGS IN SPAIN AND COLONIAL SPANISH AMERICA This course introduced picaresque, which is a form of narrative told from the perspective of individuals of low social class. The trajectory of this mode of writing in colonial Spanish America is reconstructed, of which the roots can be traced back to Lazarillo de Tormes in Spain. The course examines how a kind of text that thematizes poverty and scarcity unfolds within the context of colonialism and imperialism. The following texts are considered : Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, Relación de los naufragios ; Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora, Infortunios de Alonso Ramírez; Fernández de Lizardi, El periquillo sarniento. 3

These texts represent a different vision of society, not from the perspective of the master but that of the slave. Strategies of Afro-Hispanic discourse and its intersection with that of the dominant society are analyzed. 3

SPA 827 THE SHORT STORY IN LATIN AMERICA This course, by taking advantage of the brevity of the texts considered, examines theoretical issues involving interpretation, the Latin American canon, and the question of reading. Short stories from the entire range of the Latin American literary tradition, including colonial and Brazilian are presented. 3
SPA 830 STUIDIES ON 20TH CENTURY SPANISH AMERICAN NOVEL The course concentrates on major trends and authors from the Mexican Revolution through the "boom" novelists of the Sixties. Azuela, Guiraldes, Rulfo, Fuentes, Vargas Llosa are among the novelists included. 3
